To protect the throne, seventeen-year-old spy Kali must play a male guardsman trainee by day and royal lady by night.
Orphaned and trained on a spymaster’s remote estate, Kali is a scout who works alone in the shadows. But when a terror group threatens the Dansil throne, the king forces Kali to accept a mission at the palace or forfeit her sister’s life.
Suddenly thrust into the light, Kali must infiltrate high society as the royal Lady Lianna while penetrating the servant ranks as Kal, a male guardsman trainee. It doesn’t help that Trace, the harsh and enigmatic captain of the king’s guard, is soon assigned as both Lady Lianna’s palace escort and Kal’s commanding officer.
As Kali edges closer to the truth behind the violent group’s identity, she uncovers dangerous secrets that could bring her mission to a brutal end. A scout’s job is to observe and report, never to engage . . . but if it means saving her sister and kingdom, Kali may have no choice.
TRACING SHADOWS, by Amazon bestselling author Alex Lidell, is the first novel in the Scout series. Perfect for fans of Tamora Pierce, Leigh Bardugo, and Sarah J. Maas.
Tracing Shadows (Scout #1) by Alex Lidell is a well conceived and paced YA fantasy novel. Kali (Kalianna) is the bastard daughter of the king’s dead brother. Cast out from the court she has been trained to be a royal scout. To learn and report without being seen. Her sister, Leaf, is a Whisperer, able to manipulate and tune magic crystals and outlawed publicly in the kingdom of Dansil. When Kali and Leaf are summoned by their uncle, King Firehorn, to work in the capital, Kali has a new challenge, be both Lady Lianna and guard trainee Kal, in order to uncover insidious plot against the kingdom.
The story moves at a steady pace and I very much enjoyed Kali’s character. She is convincing as Kal and is quick thinking and tough, while also being witty and clever as Lianna, while still being intrinsically Kali in both places. As Kali learns more about the court, Prince Wil and guard Trace she is pulled deeper into both characters and consequences begin to mount. The hidden grit and character that Kali’s character has, in all personas really makes Tracing Shadows a well written and complex tale. I enjoyed the character development that both Kali and Trace undergo as well as the twists that while hinted at are still left to mystery until near the end, and I can’t wait for book 2 with all we are given by the end of this one.
Overall, Tracing Shadows by Alex Lidell was a very enjoyable and well written book which I enjoyed a lot. The progression of the characters and how they grow with each other and a menace that grows as we learn more makes it fun, complex, and engaging throughout. I couldn’t put it down.
3 winners will receive an eBook set of Alex’s TIDES SERIES & an eBook of TRACING SHADOWS, INTERNATIONAL.
