In the sequel to the beloved high fantasy East, Rose sets off on a perilous journey to find her true love when he goes missing in a thrilling tale of danger, magic, adventure, and revenge.
When Rose first met Charles, he was trapped in the form of a white bear. To rescue him, Rose traveled to the land that lay east of the sun and west of the moon to defeat the evil Troll Queen. Now Rose has found her happily-ever-after with Charles—until a sudden storm destroys his ship and he is presumed dead. But Rose doesn’t believe the shipwreck was an act of nature, nor does she believe Charles is truly dead. Something much more sinister is at work. With mysterious and unstoppable forces threatening the lives of the people she loves, Rose must once again set off on a perilous journey. And this time, the fate of the entire world is at stake.

Review
West by Edith Pattou is the sequel to book one in the series, East. A young adult fantasy novel that continues the story about Rose and Charles, her white bear. A re-telling of the Norwegian fairytale, East of the Sun and West of the Moon, West continues Rose and Charles’ story three-years after the adventures in the first book when Rose saved Charles from the Troll Queen.
Filled with adventure, fantasy, and romance, Ms. Pattou writes a story that slowly builds as she layers the plot piece by piece with her multiple point of views. It may take a while to get used to Ms. Pattou’s short chapters as she tells the story from various characters povs and memories, but once you fall into the rhythm of the story it draws you in.
I enjoyed the strong emphasis on family and loved Rose as the heroine fighting for those she loved and the sake of the world. Rose is a strong heroine whose wild spirit is one to behold. There is a lot that goes on through her new journey and I love how Rose keeps fighting. Estelle was also another standout character as well.
Overall, West was a great sequel with dynamic characters and a story full of heart. I like the multiple characters, and enjoyed reading about Rose, her White Bear, and their to stop a familiar foe and get back home.
